Tripoli, March 30, 2024 (LANA) -  Yesterday Friday, Libya received an artifact from France that had been looted from the tombs of the city of Shahat, eastern Libya after 2011, dating back to the fourth century BC and representing half of a funerary head.

The head of the Administrative Control Authority, Abdullah Qadirbuh, said in a statement to the media at Meitiga Airport after the piece’s arrival at the Airport, “It gives us great pleasure to stand with pride in the recovery of this important antique piece bearing the number 413, which unfortunately was stolen after the year 2011.

He added, "The importance of the archaeological piece is due to the fact that it represents an integral part of our history and heritage. Whoever has no heritage has no identity. In order to preserve our heritage and identity, our title that we always raise in all international forums is the recovery of these looted and smuggled pieces, plundered, and frozen money for our people to exploit in building construction."

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers and Acting Head of the Antiquities Department, Ali Al-Taher Shalak, told the Libyan News Agency, “The artifact represents half of a funerary head dating back to the fourth century BC, and it is one of the pieces looted from the Libyan lands of the eastern region.”

He added, "Coordination was made with the French authorities, and in cooperation with the Libyan embassy in France, this piece, which belongs to the torso of a marble funerary statue dating from the Hellenistic (Paltemic) period, was recovered and is 56 cm high."
