Geneva, January 10, 2024 (LANA) - It was announced today, Wednesday in Geneva, that the Kingdom of Morocco has been elected to the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the year 2024.

Morocco's election to chair the United Nations Human Rights Council came after 30 members out of the 47 member states of the United Nations Human Rights Council supported Morocco's candidacy, compared to the nomination of South Africa, which received only 17 votes.

A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad considered that Morocco’s election, for the first time in its history, to head this prestigious UN body, is a recognition by the international community of the visionary vision of King Mohammed VI in the field of protecting and promoting human rights.

Added that, the Kingdom of Morocco, which makes a recognized contribution within the Human Rights Council, especially within the processes established to develop this body, expresses its happiness with the confidence placed in it. It sees this as a strong signal of support from the international community for its constructive approach and united leadership on key issues such as interfaith dialogue, tolerance and the fight against racial hatred, the right to a sustainable environment, the rights of migrants and the impact of new technologies.
