Tripoli, May 8, 2024 (Lana): During its 80th session held yesterday, the UN adopted the draft resolution submitted by Libya, along with Bahrain and Tajikistan, entitled “World Football Day.”

The Libyan mission to the UN presented the draft resolution, which was adopted by 170 UN member states before adoption.

This resolution designates May 25  of each year as World Football Day, as this date coincides with the organization of the first World Football Championship with representation from all continents of the world, and this was in 1924 during the Summer Olympics.

The resolution calls on all Member States, UN organizations, international and regional organizations, football federations, the private sector, and civil society to celebrate this day.

In Libya's speech before the General Assembly, when presenting the resolution on behalf of the countries sponsoring it, Ambassador Taher El-Sonni stressed the importance of this resolution despite the difficult circumstances and crises that the world is going through, especially these days.

“This resolution is also considered one of the tools through which it is possible to create a state of tolerance and peace, as football is the first popular sport around the world,” El-Sonni added.

Al-Sunni stated that football is not just a game but rather a universal language that transcends politics, barriers, and borders due to its cultural and social impact, stressing the need to exploit this sport to promote health and well-being, stimulate unity and societal integration, and promote the values of sportsmanship, equal opportunities, and peace around the world.

It is worth mentioning that the Libyan mission, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with the missions of Bahrain and Tajikistan, took over a few months ago to lead and launch this initiative, facilitate consultation sessions on the text of the resolution, and form a group to provide and mobilize the necessary support for it. The group consists of 16 countries: Libya, Bahrain, Tajikistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, Malta, Kenya, Indonesia, Liechtenstein, Mongolia, Saint Lucia, and the Dominican Republic.
