Al-Lafi stresses the importance of a positive and constructive Russian role, for the benefit of stability in Libya.

Moscow, May 13, 2024 (LANA) - Representative in the Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, stressed the importance of bilateral relations between Libya and Russia, and the importance of partnership in a number of bilateral fields between the two countries.

This came during Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's reception in Moscow on Monday of the representative of the Presidential Council, accompanied by Al-Taher Al-Baour, who is in charge of managing the affairs of the office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

  Al-Lafi stressed, according to the Presidential Council, the importance of a positive and constructive Russian role, for the benefit of stability in Libya, and the importance of supporting the work of the 5+5 Joint Military Committee.

Al-Lafi pointed out the necessity of ending the political impasse in Libya, and paving the way for fair consensual elections as soon as possible.

Al-Baour, for his part, stressed during the meeting the depth of the relationship between the two countries, and discussed the role of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, especially after the resignation of the UN envoy, where the speedy appointment of a new envoy and the mission’s support in managing the political and security process in Libya were discussed.

For his part, Lavrov expressed his country’s readiness to continue to stand by the Libyans, in everything that serves the interests of the two peoples and the two friendly countries, revealing his country’s efforts to open a consulate in Benghazi and work to strengthen bilateral relations.

The meeting discussed activating the work of the joint committee, discussing ways to resume its work, and the return of Russian companies to Libya, especially in the oil, gas, and infrastructure sectors.

The meeting touched on Russia's role in the region, and how to cooperate and consult to find effective solutions in the region, through true partnership, in addition to addressing the Gaza issue, and thanking the Russian role towards it.

The meeting also dealt with informing the Russian side of the latest developments in the file of national reconciliation and transitional justice in Libya, and ways of cooperation in this field, according to the Presidential Council.
