Brussels, March 20, 2023 (LANA) - Today, Monday, the Council of the European Union extended the mandate of the military operation of the Common Security and Defense Policy in the Mediterranean known as "IRINI" until March 31, 2025.

  According to what was published by the Italian news agency Nova, the decision to extend the mandate of the European operation in the Mediterranean "IRINI" was taken after the strategic review of the operation carried out by the Political and Security Committee.

The operation was launched on March 31, 2020 as a tangible contribution from the European Union to the process established by the international community to support the return of peace and stability in Libya. Its main mission is to contribute to the implementation of the UN arms embargo in Libya, through the use of air, satellite and sea means.
