During a press conference in New York, the Secretary-General of the United Nations affirmed the continuation of work with the Libyans to hold the elections as soon as possible.

New York, January 14, 2022 (Lana) - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Gutierrez affirmed that his Special Adviser for Libya, Stephanie Williams, is working hard with the parties with the aim of creating the appropriate conditions to move things forward quickly, with regard to the elections in Libya.

   In response to a press question about the date of the Libyan elections during his conference held Thursday in New York, the Secretary-General said that there are "positive elements" that are being achieved for the first time in several years, noting that the 127 members of the House of Representatives represent all parts of Libya. They met and established a committee to draw up a road map.

"We will work with them to make sure that this map will allow the elections to be held as quickly as possible, because I think it is important to establish legitimate institutions in the country," Gutierrez added.

In the same context, according to a statement attributed to his spokesman, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Gutierrez, praised the 2.8 million Libyans who registered to vote, and called for respecting the will of the people, stressing the need to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya in the appropriate conditions to end the political transition peacefully and transfer power to democratically elected institutions.
