The UN mission calls on the Libyan authorities and actors to work collectively

Tripoli, March 13, 2024 (LANA) - The UN envoy, Abdullah Batili, called on the Libyan authorities and actors to collectively push forward the reconstruction process of Derna and the areas affected by the Mediterranean storm, and to focus on the needs and highest interests of the people whose lives were severely affected by these floods.

       This came in a joint statement with his deputy, Humanitarian Coordinator Georgette Gagnon, on the occasion of the six-month anniversary of the devastating floods that the eastern region witnessed as a result of the storm.

   In the statement published by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya on its Facebook page, Batili stressed the need for a coordinated national program for the reconstruction process, the need to disburse the necessary funds to finance long-term reconstruction efforts, and the need to manage and distribute those funds transparently, with Effective oversight and accountability to the Libyan people.

   The statement affirmed the United Nations' commitment to supporting a coordinated national platform that supports a comprehensive and sustainable recovery that prioritizes the livelihoods of those affected and supports their efforts.

   The statement recalled the magnitude of the tragedy resulting from the storm, noting the tremendous efforts made by local residents to rebuild and advance their communities, and praising the admirable resilience and resilience they demonstrated.

   He pointed to the efforts of the United Nations regarding the disaster, as it succeeded, in cooperation with its partners in the field of humanitarian relief, in reaching 247,000 affected people, and provided them with emergency humanitarian assistance, including providing shelter, clean water, food, and educational, medical, and psychosocial support.

     The UN envoy stressed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the residents of Derna and its surrounding areas in their recovery as the humanitarian response work approaches the end, pledging to continue working closely with local and international partners to help rebuild lives and local communities, promote sustainable development, and defend the rights and safety of all those affected.
