Italy: Declaring state of emergency due to the increase in migrant flows by sea.

Pulbished on:

Rome, April 12, 2023 (LANA) - The Italian government declared a state of emergency to deal with the issue of immigration due to the threefold increase in migrant flows across the Mediterranean waters.

The Maritime and Civil Protection Ministry said the state of emergency would be backed by an initial funding of 5 million euros ($5.45 million) and would last for six months.

At the same time, the sources stress, it will be possible to increase and strengthen detention and repatriation centers for those who do not have the right to stay in Italy and to strengthen identification and expulsion activities.

It indicated that the Civil Defense and the Italian Red Cross will share their rich experience in the procedures for providing solutions to receive immigrants in a short time, with appropriate standards.

The government that took power in October pledged to limit mass immigration, but Interior Ministry data indicates that about 31,300 immigrants have arrived in Italy since the beginning of 2023 so far, up from about seven thousand and 900 immigrants in the same period last year.
