Geneva, May 04, 2024  (LANA) - The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that an Israeli military attack on the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip “may lead to a bloodbath,” calling for a ceasefire.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization said on the X platform on Friday: “The World Health Organization is deeply concerned that a large-scale military operation in Rafah in Gaza may lead to a bloodbath and further weaken the already damaged health system.”

For her part, Hanan Balkhi, Regional Director of the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean, described the situation in the Gaza Strip as catastrophic by all standards, after the war passed its 200th day.

Balkhi said: “More than two hundred days have passed since the devastating crisis in Gaza, during which the residents of the Strip suffered the most, and the entire Strip turned into a land unfit for life.”

The Regional Director of World Health estimated that more than 1.7 million people are among the displaced, as they were forced to leave to flee “unprecedented violence, after they lost everything dear, their homes, possessions, and loved ones as well.”

She stressed that deprivation of basic needs, namely food, fuel, sanitation, shelter, security, and health care, is inhumane and cannot be tolerated, considering that the continuation of this situation heralds an increase in infections, the approach of famine, and the spread of diseases.
