Ecuador declares a state of emergency because of energy crisis.

Pulbished on:

Quito, April 20, 2024  (LANA) - Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on Saturday declared a state of emergency in the country for two months due to the energy crisis that led to the rationalization of electricity consumption in this South American country.

A decree by the president, who took office last November, said: “A state of emergency is declared due to serious internal unrest and the deteriorating social situation throughout the country, resulting from the exceptional situation of the electricity sector, in order to ensure the continuity of providing electricity services to the population.”

The presidential decree granted the army and police broad powers to prevent acts of sabotage targeting power plants.

The state of emergency aims to ensure the continuity of public electricity service after the drought affected production activities in the hydroelectric dams on which Ecuador depends.
