Tripoli, 13 January 2016(Lana) The last quarter of 2015 has seen
grave violations and assaults against journalists and the media in
Libya, which could threaten the entire journalistic and media work, a
watchdog report said.
The report published by the Libyan Freedom of the Press Centre
revealed the extent of the violations against journalists by
different parties bent on politicizing or silencing the media organs
during the period from October to December 2015.
The report showed the increase in the ratio of attacks on
journalists including kidnapping, coercive disappearance, beatings
and intimidation. This according to the report led to self-
censorship and diminishing of the ability of journalists to carry out
their work properly inside Libya.
The report said arbitrary arrests and kidnappings still topping
the list of violations as well as the harassment and censorship
against journalists, who find themselves working in an environment
charged with political division and tribal fanaticism.
Despite the UN-brokered agreement between political parties
allied with the armed groups, violations continued until the national
consensus government moves to put an end to them, the report added.
The biggest challenge for the Governemnt is to take measures to
establish more open practices that guarantee the freedom of the
press, and to eliminate the sources of intimidation and terrorism
against journalists and the media in general, the report said, adding
that 26 cases of assaults on journalists and the media were
registered in 2015 compared to 23 in the third quarter of the year.
Murder attempts and threatening against journalists have
increased in the last quarter of 2015. 5 cases were registered in
three Libyan cities compared to 3 in the third quarter of the year,
the report indicated.
Arbitrary detention cases and coercive disappearance also
increased, 8 were registered compared to 5 in the third quarter.
Kidnapping and torture against journalists and news readers
registered to 4 compared to 3 in the third quarter. 4 cases of
threatening prosecution or denying work permits against journalists
were reported, compared to 6 in the third quarter, it added.
