Cairo, May 21, 2026 (LANA) – Cairo hosted a meeting today of the foreign ministers of Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia, within the framework of the tripartite mechanism of neighboring countries on Libya.

According to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting aimed to consult on the latest political and security developments in Libya and to discuss ways to support efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement that achieves security and stability and preserves Libya's unity and sovereignty.

In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the ministers emphasized the deep historical and fraternal ties that bind their countries to Libya, and the shared neighborly relations and common destiny that unite them. They reiterated their commitment to continuing coordination and consultation within the framework of the tripartite mechanism of neighboring countries in order to contribute to preserving Libya's unity and sovereignty over its territory.

The statement stressed that a comprehensive political solution remains the only way to end the Libyan crisis, emphasizing the importance of advancing the political process under the auspices of the United Nations. This would lead to ending the division, unifying Libyan state institutions, and creating the appropriate conditions for holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections in response to the aspirations of the Libyan people.

The ministers also affirmed the principle of Libyan ownership and leadership of the political process, stressing that the solution must be Libyan-led, emanating from the will and consensus of all components of the Libyan people without exclusion, and in a manner that preserves Libya’s unity and sovereignty.

The ministers expressed their concern regarding the security challenges facing Libya, including incidents of violence and political assassinations, reiterating their call on all Libyan parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritize the supreme national interest in order to preserve the security and safety of the Libyan people and safeguard the nation’s resources. They emphasized the importance of supporting efforts aimed at consolidating the ceasefire and strengthening security and stability throughout the country.

The statement affirmed that reaching the desired political settlement requires adopting a comprehensive approach based on the interconnectedness of various political, economic, and social tracks, enabling the achievement of security, stability, development, and prosperity for the Libyan people.

The ministers expressed their rejection of all forms of foreign interference in Libyan affairs, as this constitutes a major factor in fueling tensions and prolonging the crisis. They reiterated their support for the efforts of the Joint Military Commission (5+5) to solidify the ceasefire and work towards the withdrawal of all foreign forces, fighters, and mercenaries from Libyan territory within a defined timeframe, thus paving the way for the unification of Libyan military and security institutions.

The statement emphasized the importance of continued coordination and consultation among the three countries with the United Nations and regional and international partners, including the League of Arab States and the African Union, in support of efforts to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable political settlement in Libya.

The ministers concluded their meeting by affirming their commitment to holding regular meetings of the tripartite neighboring countries mechanism to enhance coordination and consultation on developments in Libya. They agreed that the next meeting would be held in Algeria at a date to be determined through diplomatic channels.
