Ghadames celebrates the 1400th anniversary of the construction of its ancient mosque.
Pulbished on:Ghadames, August 15, 2022 (LANA) - Yesterday, Sunday, the city of Ghadames witnessed the organization of a celebration marking the 1400th anniversary of the founding of the ancient mosque.
The celebration included a number of activities, including an opening speech by Sheikh Muhammad Abu Bakr al-Thani, and a conclusion to the Holy Qur’an. An exhibition of rare manuscripts and documents was also organized.
It is noteworthy that the ancient mosque in Ghadames was built in the year 44 AH /668 AD and is characterized by two square minarets and a movable minbar (pulpit) . It was also known as the Warnugan III Mosque. Most of its parts were destroyed as a result of the French-American raid on the city of Ghadames in 1943 during World War II, and then it was restored after that.
