Pulbished on:

Tripoli, 13 March, 2022 (Lana) - The US ambassador and envoy to Libya, Richard Norland, announced, Sunday, readiness of the Prime Minister-designate by the House of Representatives, Fatehi Bashagha, and the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid al-Dabaiba to "engage in... Urgent negotiations” to discuss how to manage the final stages of the interim government period and prepare for parliamentary and presidential elections “as soon as possible.

In a series of tweets, the US embassy said that Norland praised, during a meeting with the Prime Minister-designate by the House of Representatives, “Bashagha” in Tunis, on Saturday, for “the interest he showed to engage in urgent negotiations facilitated by the United Nations with the aim of reaching a political understanding.” With the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, "Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba".

The embassy added that the negotiations will focus on “how to manage the final stages of this interim government period and prepare for parliamentary and presidential elections as soon as possible,” noting that Norland conveyed his “understanding that Prime Minister Dabaiba is ready to participate in these talks,” noting that the form and location of the talks will be determined by the parties themselves accepted, in consultation with the United Nations and international partners.

The US position is clear: We respect the right of Libyans to decide their own future, and we urge them to do so only by peaceful means without resorting to violence, the embassy said.

The embassy stressed that free, fair and inclusive elections are the only formula for lasting stability, stressing that in the current situation, siding with one party against another is not an option, and the only position that can be justifiably chosen is peaceful negotiations.
