London, 26 December 2021 (Lana) UN Secretary-General Special Adviser on Libya Stephanie Williams has affirmed that candidate qualification is a matter for Libyan judiciary to decide and all parties must comply with the rulings of the competent authorities in Libya i.e. the House of Representatives, the Commission and the judiciary.

The United Nations is fully prepared to help Libyans overcome all difficulties and create appropriate conditions as soon as possible in order to ensure holding free, fair and credible elections, Williams said.

In an interview published Sunday in the London-based Saudi newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, Williams refused to be dragged into setting the best deadline for the elections after they were postponed on December 24th, saying that setting the next date (it is up to the competent authorities in Libya, i.e. the House of Representatives, the Commission and the judiciary.

The United Nations is ready to help Libyans overcome all difficulties and create appropriate conditions as soon as possible in order to ensure free, fair and credible elections, as Libyans have decided to unite, saying: "Enough to war, enough to divisions." Yes, we at the United Nations facilitated their talks and accompanied them throughout the journey, but it was their will that prevailed in the end, and it will prevail, she added.
