London, April 24, 2021 (LANA) - The US ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, confirmed that someone will try to obstruct the holding of the elections, but I am ready to be surprised that this process will succeed. Of course I cannot guarantee its success, but the most important factor is that the Libyans want it to happen.

In an interview with ‘’Al-Sharq Al-Awsat’’, Saudi Arabia newspaper, to be published tomorrow in London, Norland revealed part of his contacts with the Russians regarding “Wagner mercenaries” in Libya, explaining that Russian officials have come to acknowledge their presence after they previously pretended that they had nothing to do with the Russian government. He stressed that the Turks are ready to negotiate also the withdrawal of the Syrian fighters they have sent to Libya.

Norland said: "It is not enough to have an interim government. There is a need for a full-fledged government that can restore Libya's sovereignty and territorial integrity and get rid of foreign bases and the way to achieve this is through elections, of course I cannot guarantee its success, but the most important factor is that the Libyans want it to happen, and the next basic step is to lay down by next July the constitutional and legal basis on which this election will be conducted’’.

The US ambassador to Libya, who was speaking to the newspaper from the US embassy in London; ‘’Imad Al-Sayeh, head of the Election Commission, said publicly that this date is a key date "Deadline" for him, as these matters must be ready in order for him to be able to hold the elections. ... and the House of Representatives must now agree on the constitutional basis and the legal basis on which the elections will be held. The parliament is progressing slowly. If this does not happen with the House of Representatives, then it is possible to resort to the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum mechanism which remains alive and can be resorted to, if the House of Representatives does not arise as required to’’.

The newspaper said that; (Richard Norland, praised the efforts made by the new Libyan government headed by Abdel Hamid Dbaiba to organize elections on December 24th, speaking of an "opportunity" available to end 10 years of chaos, and acknowledged that there are many challenges facing the new Libyan authorities represented by the Dbaiba government, and the presidential council headed by Muhammad Al-Mnifi, pointing out that the issue of "mercenaries" is one of these main problems facing the new interim ruling.)
