Rome, 23.06.2020 - Lana - Italy, through its Foreign Minister Luigi
de Mayo, called on Monday, to accelerate the appointment of the
Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to
Libya as soon as possible, succeeding the former envoy Ghassan
Salamah who resigned from his mission early last March .
According to the Italian "Aki" agency, this came during a joint press
conference for "Mayo" in Rome with his German counterpart Haikou
Maas, where he stressed that there is no other way but a political
solution to the conflict in Libya.
De Mayo talked about the IRINI process to monitor the UN arms embargo
imposed on Libya, describing it as a "balanced task", noting that
even if a ceasefire is reached, IRINI will be decisive; Because "at
that point we will also have to restrict the arrival of arms" to
Libya.
