Rome, - Lana - The command of the European naval "IRINI" operation,
designed to monitor the arms embargo to Libya, has announced the
accession of the Greek navy frigate "Spatsay", according to Italian
news agency Aki.
The Italian agency said, Tuesday, that the Greek frigate is carrying
a team specialized in intercepting operations at sea, in addition to
a helicopter.
It added, that the Greek frigate will patrol a specific area of the
central Mediterranean supported by three planes provided by
Luxembourg, Poland and Germany.
20 European Union member states are participating in the IRINI
process, both in human and financial resources. The maritime
operation will also benefit from the satellite imagery services
provided by the European Union Satellite Center.
The IRINI Naval Operation was officially launched almost two months
ago, despite not having all the resources. It is considered a
contribution from the European Union in controlling the flow of arms
to Libya and the smuggling of oil from it, which, in the opinion of
European institutions, will reduce violence and lead to a political
solution to the Libyan conflict.
