Berlin, 11.06.2020 - Lana - The German "Sea Watch" organization
working in the field of rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean
refused to return migrants to Libya, stressing that it will continue
to pressure the authorities in Malta and Italy to allocate a safe
port for the landing of migrants.
The Italian news agency "Aki" quoted from the spokesperson for the
organization's branch in Italy, "Georgia Lenardi" in an interview
with the newspaper "La Repubblica" on Tuesday, as saying: "We will
definitely never return the migrants we rescue to the Libyans, but we
will continue to go to Italy and Malta to allocate a port for us, we
have no alternative. "
"Lenardi" demanded that Italian officials should take responsibility,
hoping that he would not decide to leave people at sea for weeks, as
did the former Minister of the Interior "Mathew Salfini" to play arm
wrestling with Europe.
"Lenardi" stressed that rescue at sea is a duty, and should end up
transporting people to a safe haven, noting that the organization has
not seen from the Italian government any of the measures to change
the approaches that we expected, compared to the previous government.
On the fact that Italy has declared its ports unsafe, the spokeswoman
replied that this measure is using the health emergency accurately to
avoid taking responsibility.
