UNSMIL expresses its deep concern about the armed clashes that took place in the capital last night.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, April 12, 2024 (LANA) - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya expressed its deep concern about the armed clashes that took place in the capital, Tripoli, on April 11, calling on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid escalation or reprisals.
The mission said in a statement issued on Thursday and published on its official page, “The mission condemns the repeated use of violence as a means of resolving disputes, as it puts the safety of civilians at risk and undermines the fragile security situation. It stresses the need to hold those responsible to account.”
The statement added, "The state of chronic insecurity is nothing but a result of the continuing political crisis and the erosion of institutional legitimacy. It constitutes a reminder of Libya's need to give priority to holding elections in order to establish legitimate governing bodies capable of extending state authority and upholding the rule of law."
