US urges GNU to continue dealing with Libyan institutions to pave the way for presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

Tripoli, 16 August, 2022 (Lana) - Vice President of the Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi and the US Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, stressed the need to continue work to solve all political bottlenecks that impede any project for stability in Libya, and pave the way for holding presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

In addition to spare the country any escalation that might affect the political process and the safety of civilians. This came in a tweet by Al-Lafi on his Twitter account, after a phone call with Ambassador Norland, during which they discussed a number of files related to the political and security situation in Libya.

Al-Lafi added in a second tweet, saying, "They stressed the importance of the success of the national reconciliation project and the role played by the Presidential Council in this regard, and expediting finding a solid ground for consensus between the House of Representatives and the state on the constitutional basis."

For its part, the US Embassy in Libya made a series of tweets after the meeting, in which it said that Ambassador Norland spoke with Representative Al-Lafi” about the efforts of the Presidential Council to address the tense political and security situation in Libya, and they agreed that the parties should avoid any step that would provoke violence.

The embassy added, "The ambassador praised the interaction of the Presidential Council with key leaders, and referred to the intense discussions in Ankara and Cairo," and that the United States urges the Government of National Unity to continue engaging with Libyan institutions to pave the way for holding presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible. Ambassador Norland also praised the efforts made by the Council in promoting national reconciliation, and welcomed the role of the African Union in this regard.
