Pulbished on:

Tripoli, 13 August 2022 (Lana) The Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Rezidon Zeninga said that young people, male and female, are Libya's best hope for stability. In a statement issued by the mission on the occasion of International Youth Day, which falls on August 12, Zeninga urged political leaders to put in place practical mechanisms to involve young people in the decision-making process and respond to their call, not only for elections, but also for stability and all forms of economic and social development that accompanies it.

The UN official stressed that the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has worked and will continue to work with all segments of Libyan society, including young men and women, who are shaping the future of the country, in accordance with the provisions of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 of 2015 on youth, peace and security, by recognizing the importance of empowering youth in the political process and contributing to peacemaking and security.

Zeninga stressed that "it is crucial to listen to young people and give them opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the decision-making process, stressing that the mission's first priority now is to provide assistance and expertise to the Libyan parties to resolve the political stalemate, and to move forward towards inclusive and credible national elections, as soon as possible based on a solid constitutional framework. "It's time for everyone, including the youth, to put aside differences and work together for a brighter and more prosperous future for Libya," he said.
