UN mission refutes alleged circulated correspondence between Kupis and Guterres in which he reportedly opposed Al Dbeiba candidacy to elections, describing it as a forgery and a childish attempt to mislead public opinion.

 Tripoli, 3 December 2021 (Lana) The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has refuted what it said a false letter alleging that Special Envoy Kupis had addressed UN Secretary-General Guterres on November 10, expressing his opposition and concern about possible participation of the Head of the Government Al Dbeiba in the upcoming presidential elections, and that according to information available to the mission staff, was actively using the resources of the transitional government to prepare the basis for his participation in the elections, and that there was an agreement between representatives of the government, the Electoral Commission and the Judiciary to prepare a a legal framework that allows Al Dbeiba to successfully register as a presidential candidate.

 In a note posted on its official Twitter account, the mission considered it a false message and a desperate "childish" attempt to mislead public opinion.

The mission said it urged Libyans to be vigilant and to pay attention to the flow of fabricated and false news aimed at misleading them and may aim to obstruct their exercise of their democratic rights to choose their representatives through the ballot box.
