Jufra, 02.07.2015(Lana) Libya is characterized by a diversity of
its archaeology and nature of its soil that expands from the
Mediterranean to the Green Mountains to black and white Harouj to Red
Hamada with diverse colours that capture the eyes and hearts with
their beauties and wonderful sceneries.
In this report, focus is made on one of these landmarks "Waw
Namous" which is considered one of the world's intriguing site even
according to testimonies of international researchers and geologists
who visited the place and published literature about the place's
ancient history and charm.
Waw Namous is an inactive volcanic mountain located south
central Libya with an altitude of 575 meter. It is in a form of a
volcanic cone formed by remains of a volcanic eruption and ashes
surrounded by beautiful lakes encircled by dates trees south of the
White Haroj which resembles the terrain of the moon with a
magnificent reddish colour sulphurous lake .
Black volcanic sheets are scattered over the mountain especially
at its foot together with diverse plants such as cane and bamboo and
trees like dates trees and tamarisk . The volcanic crater expands
between 10 to 20 SKM in the presence of a natural area which makes
it a good natural reserve for many birds and animals.
Most scientific studies indicate that the name of the mountains
was coined after waves of mosquitoes that swarmed the place which
called in local language "Namous". Anthrapoliststs presumed that the
use of iron in West Africa was credited to iron powered used by NOK
civilization. The poweder is present in southern western region of
Waw Namous. The area regarded first class tourist attraction.
Visitors linked it to a plot of moon fallen on earth".
Studies did not accurately record the latest eruption of the
volcano, but probably occurred few centuries ago. The mountain
comprises three small salt lakes one is a warm one which is small
with changing colours. Due to large area of the crater it can be
viewed easily from space.
"Waw Namous"" interpreted as "Oasis of mosquitoes" or according
to other interpretation "a crater of mosquito" as the small lake
near the crater of the volcano is swarming with mosquitoes, so
camping nearby requires a net or insect repleint material during
sleeping time, or using local traditional material which is a mashed
garlic with olive oil and used as a cream.
This world class tourist landmark is a value added to the Libyan
desert beauties booming with wonders and conundrums. Packing into
the place is intriguing as the trip combines enjoyment with benefit
starting from the heavenly space and spontaneous welcome in the
embrace of the virgin nature in day light in which Sun's life shines
and smooth sand chants a dreamy song against the backdrop of
wonderful oasis and charming lakes. Beauties of the night in which
moon light spills into rock formation against the backdrop of
sparkling stars that seem so near to you as if your are in another
planet.
Waw Namous stands high just like the standing of the people of
the area, one fails to describe its beauties as it is one of the most
beautiful areas. In one accossion it was visited by 4000 to 7000
people in one go to watch the complete Solar eclipse on 29.03.2016
which lingered for longer period, a journey will remain vivid in the
memory of whoever visited it.
