Berlin Meeting Declares Full Support for Libyan Political Dialogue.
Pulbished on:
Berlin, 11 June 2015(Lana) A number of European countries have
expressed their support for the UN-sponsored Libyan political
dialogue and the proposals made to reach a consensus between Libyan
antagonists.
This came in the final communiqué of the Berlin meeting which was
held on Wednesday by senior officials of governments of the Russian
Federation, Spain, Germany, Italy, China, France, UK and the United
States as well as the EU with representatives of the Libyan parties
taking part in the political dialogue.
Participants praised commitment by the Libyan negotiators to the
ongoing dialogue led by the UN Support Mission in Libya.
They said they were convinced that a comprehensive political
settlement was the only solution to the political crisis in Libya,
and that the challenges faced by Libya can be better and sustainably
addressed through a unified Libya in partnership with the
international community.
The governments and the EU have paid tribute to efforts of the
participants in the talks and other tracks of the peace process.
They also welcomed the support the peace process had among the
Libyan people, and the contribution of Libyan civil organisations to
the process.
The participants praised initiatives taken by a number of
municipalities to establish local ceasefire, exchange of prisoners
and return of the displaced to their homes, urging the Libyan parties
to take the opportunity in goodwill under the UN sponsorship to reach
a political agreement that ensures a ceasefire and establishment of
political institutions and security arrangements.
The final communiqué said the officials have also met
representatives of Chad, Tunisia, Algeria, Sudan, Egypt, Morocco and
Niger and welcomed their effort in support of the process led by
Bernardino Leon, and also praised the effort of the African Union and
other parties.
