Brussels, 28 May 2105(Lana) The UN Secretary General Ban Ki Mon
has renewed his objection to military actions, to destroy illegal
migrants boats in the Mediterranean which the EU is considering.
'What concerns me is the notion of destroying the boats used by
traffickers, there could be other ways ..that's the point which I
voiced my concern over, Mon said at a press conference here on
Wednesday.
'When plans are made to destroy the boats, this could lead to
depriving people from their already limited means of living, he said.
The EU has decided on May 18 to set up a marine mission to
confront the migrants traffickers across the Mediterranean, after a
series of tragic drowning incidents off the Libyan coast.
'Of course I encourage boosting military capabilities of
surveillance and rescue, and the priority should be given to saving
lives and assistance, Mon added.
'We have to show solidarity at the international level, the UN
Secretary General said, adding 'we need a legitimate and expanded
means of migration so that people can use natural ways of seeking a
migration and a better life.'
