More than 3,400 Illegal Immigrants rescued at sea in Mediterranean Rome, 3 May 2015(Lana) More than 3,400 migrants were rescued at sea on Saturday, mainly off Libya.

A total of 3,427 people on 16 boats were picked up during the
operation coordinated by the Italian coast guard.
Although the toll did not break the one day record number of
immigrants saved in the Mediterranean, still it is the highest rate
in recent years.
In April more than 1200 illegal migrants died. The month has also
seen numerous rescue operations coordinated by the Italian Navy,
which were culminated by the rescue on April 12 of 3791 followed by
2850 on the following day.
The EU decided on April 23 to reinforce its presence in the
Mediterranean with the aim of avoiding new loss of live, after death
of hundreds of migrants in the Mediterranean.
