Brussels, 11 March 2015(Lana) The EU High Representative of
Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said the EU
was committed to supporting any Libya economic or societal initiative
that go in parallel with the political dialogue, with an emphasis on
engaging all parts of the society.
Mogherini said , following the meeting held in Brussels yesterday
Libyan businessmen from all over Libya, the meeting was in response
to a Libyan initiative backed up by the World Bank and the UN mission
in Libya, according to statement published by her office on Tuesday.
The statement pointed out that the EU shared the businessmen
conviction about the need for a sustainable development in the
country.
It also stressed the need to engage all parts of the Libyan
society in the political dialogue.
Participants discussed the economic situation, whereby they
voiced their concern over the deterioration of the country's
financial situation and the state of the country's budget which
threatens a bankruptcy of the country.
They set up what they called Union of Libyan Businessmen, to be a
forum for dialogue with all parties.
European sources indicate that the union aspires to work at the
economic and political levels in order to put the transition process
on the right track, especially that Libya is a key economic partner
of the Europeans.
EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss the situation in
Libya at a meeting in Brussels on Monday.
The EU fears that Libyan situation could become uncontrollable,
and the country becomes a safe haven for terrorist groups and
corridor for illegal immigration and human trafficking to the
European shores.
