Brussels, 4 March 2015(Lana) The UN High Representative for
Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, said
resumption of talks between Libyan parties later this week in Morocco
would pave the way for a political agreement and a government of
national unity in Libya.
In a statement on the Libyan crisis, Mogherini said 'the EU, and
indeed the international community, continue to support the UN
Secretary General Special Envoy Bernardino Leon with whom I am in
constant contact.'
The crisis in Libya is the most serious in the southern
neighborhood of the European Union, and could escalate with even more
serious consequences on whole Europe, Mogherini said.
She stressed the need to make the UN-sponsored Libyan dialogue a
success, to end the constitutional vacuum which offered a breeding
ground for terrorist groups.
'All EU members have said they were ready to address the crisis
now more than any time before, and that Libya will once again feature
high on the agenda of the EU non-official meeting to be held in
Latvia on Friday and Saturday, Mogherini added.
The EU is prepared to offer assistance to a national unity
government in Libya, in the common battle against terrorism.
Mogherini indicated that the March 16 meeting of the Foreign
Affairs Council would be an opportunity to agree on concrete steps on
the situation in Libya.
