Rome, 1 March 2015(Lana) The Italian navy said in a statement on
Sunday the exercises 'Open Sea' it conducts in the Mediterranean,
would be held on Monday off the Libyan coast.
'The exercises are not directly linked to the crisis in Libya,
where the Italian firm Eni has an off-shore oil rig and other assets,
Admiral Perbaolu Ribovo who is in charge of the maneuvers said. The
presence of the vessels could improve security, he added.
Last year exercises were suspended because the rescue operation
mounted in the aftermath of the drowning of hundreds of immigrants
off the Island of Lampedoza in southern Italy. The mission was
substituted by a smaller EU Operation.
