Amnesty International on Wednesday called on the UN to impose
selective sanctions and investigate possible war crimes in Libya.
The organisation said in a report 'the fighting in Benghazi
involved an exchange of attacks, kidnapping, indiscriminate killing
and torture on both sides, and the city was steadily descending into
Chaos and lawlessness, and torn apart by violence perpetrated by
rival groups and collaborators seeking vengeance.
It called on the UN Security Council 'to impose sanctions like
travel ban and asset freezing on perpetrators of the violations, and
to extend the scope of Criminal Court investigations to include war
crimes.'
The UN is conducting negotiations between Libyan parties in
Geneva to form a national government and restore stability to the
country.
Amnesty International said 'the ongoing political efforts are
meaningless unless they address concerns over human rights violations
which cannot be ignored.
