Call for Demonstrations in Benghazi.
Pulbished on:
Benghazi, 15 January 2015(Lana) Residents of the Libyan eastern
city of Benghazi, fed up with the fighting inside the city quarters
that aggravated their suffering, have called for a popular uprising
against the forces of the retired General Hafter which were
constantly bombarding the city.
They set Thursday as the date for the uprising which was called
by activists in a bid to return the city to normalcy. Posters were
distributed inside and outside the city. Some read 'No to Hafter..No
to displacement..No to oppression.
Reactions to the call varied, some interpreted it as an inability
to undertake any peaceful action inside the city due to the heavy
fighting, others believed the dire living conditions in the city have
driven residents to take risks to rise up, especially that the city
dwellers are threatened with starvation because of acute shortages of
food, coupled with lack of electricity, water and communications.
Meanwhile armed civilians have blocked streets with containers
and sand dikes, to prevent the revolutionaries entering the quarters
controlled by what has become known as the Sahawat 'people who woke
up from sleep'.
Activists said the Thursday uprising plan included reopening of
all streets and engaging the Sahawat and Hafter militiamen.
It also called for authorizing the Benghazi Revolutionaries
Shura Council with the task of guarding all entries to the cities to
deny armed men entry to the city.
They called for helping displaced people to return to their
homes, demanding that the NSG provide these people all assistance
they need including food stuff, electricity, cooking gas and fuel.
