New York, 14 January 2015(Lana) The UN Support Mission in Libya
UNSML has announced that Libyan belligerent factions were expected to
meet in Geneva on Wednesday for a new round of dialogue.
The meeting, which is expected to be attended by 23
representatives of various parties, is designed to explore ways of
'ending the aggravated political and security crisis, and to hammer
out an agreement on management of the remainder of the transitional
period, UNSMIL said in a statement on Tuesday.
The decision to hold the meeting came after extensive contacts
with key players in the conflict.
The UN office in Geneva will host the talks which will be based
on the 'principles of the Feb 17 Revolution, democratic values and
human rights, respect for the constitutional declaration, state
institutions and renunciation of terrorism, the statement said.
'The Geneva talks will seek to put in place proper security
arrangements, to achieve a complete cessation of hostilities, which
caused extensive damage to the country's infrastructure and economy,
it added.
'The talks will seek to secure a gradual withdrawal of all armed
factions from all major cities and towns including Tripoli, to enable
a state control over institutions, strategic and other key
facilities, the statement said.
UNSMIL reminded 'all parties 'that the dialogue is a
comprehensive transparent process dictated by the supreme interests
of Libya, its unity and national integrity.'
It considers this process as 'an open call for all parties which
are committed to create a democratic stable Libya through peaceful
means.'
The Libyan parties have lately agreed to hold a new round of
political dialogue to end the political crisis in the country at the
UN headquarters in Geneva.
