Tripoli, 6 October 2025 (Lana)—The National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced that the Italian energy company Eni North Africa has resumed drilling at an exploratory offshore well in northwest Libya after a halt of more than five years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project aims to explore for natural gas in an offshore area located within Contract Area D, formerly known as "MN 41," approximately 95 kilometers off the Libyan coast and near the Bahr Essalam offshore field, one of Libya's most important gas-producing fields.
Drilling at the well first began in March 2020 but was halted in April of the same year due to restrictions imposed by the pandemic, at which point the site was temporarily secured.
The Scarabeo-9 rig, operated by the Italian company Saipem, is currently completing drilling to reach the required depth below the seabed.
The NOC confirmed that the resumption of this project reflects the improvement in general conditions and the return of exploration activity in the country and is an important step towards boosting gas production and providing sustainable energy sources that support the national economy.
