Libya assumes chairmanship of ESCWA's Social Development Committee.

Algeria, June 24, 2025 (LANA) – The Minister of Social Affairs in the Government of National Unity, Wafaa Al-Kilani, assumed the chairmanship of the Social Development Committee of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), succeeding the Lebanese Republic, on Tuesday during the opening of the committee's 16th session, held in the Algerian capital.

The ministry stated on its official page that the ceremony for Libya's assumption of the chairmanship of the committee was attended by ministers of social affairs and heads of delegations from Arab member states, along with ESCWA officials. The ceremony aimed to strengthen social protection mechanisms and exchange experiences among Arab countries in this vital field.

In her speech during the session, Al-Kilani affirmed Libya's commitment to supporting social development programs and expanding protection and care networks for vulnerable groups. She emphasized the importance of regional coordination to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and promote equality and social justice.

The ministry explained that the session reviewed Arab experiences in the field of social protection, with the Algerian minister praising her country's experience in this field.

It is worth noting that the session, held at the Abdellatif Rahal International Conference Center in the Algerian capital, will continue until June 25. It will discuss the challenges facing social protection systems in the Arab region and the importance of reforming them to ensure universal coverage and enhance their efficiency, thus enhancing stability and sustainable development.
