AU carries out efforts to salvage the peace agreement in south Sudan.

Juba, April 3, 2025 (LANA) - African Union mediators are holding talks in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, aimed at averting a new civil war after First Vice President Riek Machar was placed under house arrest last week.

The African Union delegation's plane arrived at Juba airport on Wednesday afternoon, carrying the "Council of Wise Men," which includes former Burundi President Domitien Ndayizeye and former Kenyan judge Effie Awuor.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO), Machar's party, said in a statement that it "warmly welcomes the arrival of the Council of Wise Men as part of ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions and support the peace process."
