Irini's mandate in Libya extended and new tasks added

Brussels, March 12, 2025 (LANA) - The European Council announced the extension of the mandate of the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) military operation in the Mediterranean, Irini, until the end of March 2027.
The European Union has led Irini since 2020, and it is tasked with enforcing the UN arms embargo on Libya in the Mediterranean.
The EU added a new mission to the operation's mandate, which will include monitoring and surveillance activities and gathering information on illicit activities other than the trafficking of arms and related materials and illicit oil exports from Libya.
