Tripoli - March 2, 2025 (LANA) - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya announced today, Sunday, that representatives of the military and security institutions in eastern and western Libya agreed to form a specialized study center to conduct specialized studies in the fields of border security.

It explained that members of the Joint Technical Coordination Team for Border Security, including two female police and army officers, participated in a two-day coordination meeting organized by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya in Tunisia last Wednesday, and the Joint Technical Coordination Team formulated a proposal to form a study center that provides an analysis of risks related to border security and practical solutions that can be applied on the ground and defined the duties, tasks and organizational structure of the center.

The mission quoted one of the participants as saying that the study center will contribute significantly to enhancing border security, combating terrorism and addressing irregular migration, adding that it will help find implementable solutions to border security issues and support the enhancement of Libyan national security.

The mission explained that, at the request of the Joint Technical Team for Counter-Terrorism, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya facilitated a field visit to a Tunisian land border post near the Libyan-Tunisian border to enhance the exchange of expertise and raise awareness of cross-border security challenges.

Ali Khalkhal from the Security Institutions Department at the mission said: "The establishment of the study center comes as part of the joint coordination mechanism approved by the Joint Technical Committee for Border Security at the Benghazi meeting on 17 and 18 December 2024."

Khalkhal confirmed that the next steps will include the actual establishment of joint border security centers and the start of their equipment, in order to enable coordination, communication and exchange of information on border security.

He indicated that the attendees decided to meet again next April in southern Libya to discuss the regional coordination mechanism.
