Guterres at the AU Summit: It is time to redress the damage caused by colonialism in the African continent.

Addis Ababa, February 15, 2025 (LANA) - The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, who is attending the 38th African Union Summit today, Saturday, in Addis Ababa, stressed that the time has come to redress the damage caused by colonialism in the African continent.

Guterres, said in a speech during the opening of the 38th ordinary session of the African Union Summit, that "the time has come to redress the damage caused by colonialism in the African continent and its continuing impact on its peoples and the slave trade," considering that there is no justification for Africa to remain absent from representation in the Security Council and that he will continue to work with the African Union to ensure the representation Africa needs, including two permanent seats in the UN Security Council.

For his part, Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed stressed in his speech that it is time to build a common future and destiny for the African continent according to a unified vision that guarantees dignity, equality and justice for all, noting that the summit's theme revolves around working to heal the wounds of historical injustices and overcome the suffering that has affected the continent's development.

Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki stressed that Africa cannot remain on the sidelines to find a place for itself in the changes taking place at the international level.
