Algeria, February 13, 2025 (LANA) - The President of the Algerian National People's Assembly, Ibrahim Boughali, called on France today, Thursday, to "officially acknowledge its full responsibility for its nuclear crimes in the Algerian desert, and to purify the lands contaminated with radiation and nuclear waste."
Boughali said in a speech, at the opening of a forum in the Assembly on the occasion of the anniversary of the first French nuclear test in Algeria on February 13, 1960, that France must "officially acknowledge its full responsibility for these nuclear crimes, not just a pale political admission, but an admission followed by a clear moral commitment."
He added that France must also "do justice to the victims of the nuclear explosions and their families in a manner commensurate with the magnitude of the tragedy they experienced, and guarantee the legitimate right of the people of Algeria to justice."
Bougali called on France to assume its responsibility in clearing the lands contaminated with radiation and nuclear waste, and to hand over to Algeria the complete archive of the test sites so that Algerian experts can assess the damage and take appropriate measures regarding it.
The President of the Algerian National People's Assembly stressed that the remnants of these nuclear explosions "must place France before its full responsibility for the consequences of its actions and their effects that cannot be evaded," noting that Algeria "will never accept that this page be turned without accountability, and will not accept that this crime remains without recognition."
Bougali proposed allocating an international day for the victims of nuclear explosions, coinciding with February 13, to serve as "a permanent reminder of the suffering of the victims, and to highlight the need to hold accountable those responsible for these heinous crimes."
