Rome - December 31, 2023 (LANA) - Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said that his country's authorities hope to resume the transfer of irregular migrants to the reception centers in Albania, expressing confidence in laying the foundations to overcome any doubts with the recent intervention legislation regarding the so-called safe countries.

The Italian news agency (AKI) quoted Piantedosi in an interview with the newspaper (La Stampa) on Tuesday, saying: "On this basis, we hope to resume the transfers as soon as possible, which are not necessary these days because the preventive measures to combat departures from Libya and Tunisia are working very well."

The Italian Interior Minister added, "I am also certain that the upcoming decisions of the European Court of Justice will confirm the legality of the agreement to manage flows signed between the Italian and Albanian governments, as it has now become clear at the European level: that these centers constitute an important part of the strategy to combat as one of those innovative solutions that the European Council often cites in order to combat irregular migration managed by human traffickers."

The Italian Minister pointed out that in 2024, we reduced the number of illegal arrivals by 60% compared to the previous year and by 38% compared to 2022, and that “for the second year in a row, return operations increased by 16%.”
