Supreme Council for Elections: Launching the process of elections for outgoing municipal councils and new administrative councils for the year 2024.

Tripoli, June 9, 2024 (LANA) - The High Electoral Commission announced today, Sunday, the start of implementing municipal council elections (the first group), numbering (60) municipal councils distributed across various regions of the country, out of (106) municipal councils targeted for this year’s elections.

 The Commission said in a statement published on its official page that the process will begin with the implementation of the first phase (voter registration phase), which will last for a period of (15 days) from today’s date until June 23, 2024, noting that registration in the municipal council elections is a completely new registration and is on the basis of residence in the municipality in which the registration applicant will be elected, acceptance of registration applications through the voter registration system using text messages (SMS) or centers (committees accepting registration applications) is limited to applications submitted by citizens residing in the targeted municipalities (the first group).

 It was explained that after completing this stage, the Commission will begin implementing the stage (distributing cards) to new registrants who did not obtain a card previously, noting that the electoral cards distributed in 2021 are considered valid and will be used in municipal council elections to verify the voter’s identity on polling day. .

 The Commission urged those wishing to run for these elections to be familiar with the conditions for candidacy and familiarize themselves with the texts of the Executive Regulations for Municipal Council Elections No. (43) of 2023, especially those related to the (recommendation) condition, the fulfillment of which depends on collecting the voter numbers contained in the cards received by them and not the national numbers, as was done previously.

 It indicated that the implementation of the municipal council elections (the second group) will begin immediately after the announcement of the final results of the elections (the first group), which are expected to be announced in the second half of August 2024.

 The High Elections Commission called on the citizens of the municipalities targeted by the electoral process to exercise their right to decide who will bear responsibility for managing the affairs of their municipalities and meeting their demands and needs.
