Arab League warns against targeting museums and historical heritage in countries experiencing conflict.
Pulbished on:Cairo, May 18, 2024 (LANA) - The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States warned, on Saturday, against targeting museums and historical heritage in many countries that have witnessed disputes and conflicts with the aim of erasing and removing everything related to Arab and Islamic civilization and culture.
The Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector at the Arab-League, Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, stressed in a statement on the occasion of International Museum Day, which falls on May 18 of each year, the importance of the role that museums play in the educational and cultural renaissance, as they represent the memory of living peoples that work to connect the present with the past, reflects the civilization and history of previous nations to subsequent generations.
Abu Ghazaleh noted that, on February 27, 2015, the museums and antiquities of the city of Mosul in Iraq were destroyed by terrorism, as these antiquities are a legacy of the Mesopotamian civilization, stressing the importance of protecting museums that guarantee the cultural heritage of peoples.
