Tripoli, April 12, 2023 (LANA) - The United Kingdom's ambassador to Libya, "Caroline Harndel," expressed her hope that Libyan leaders would be inspired by the (Belfast) Agreement, which ended an era of sectarian civil war in Ireland that lasted for more than thirty years between Catholics and Protestants, inwhich about (3500) people was killed .

"It's been 25 years since the 'Good Friday' Belfast Agreement, reflecting the courage and compromise shown by the leaders and people of Northern Ireland in order to achieve peace. I hope the leaders of Libya will be inspired by this example," Ambassador Caroline said in a tweet on her Twitter account.

Referred to as the Belfast Agreement, or what is known as the Good Friday Agreement, it is an agreement signed in 1998 between Britain, the Republic of Ireland, and the Northern Irish parties, and called for Protestants to share political power in Northern Ireland with the Catholic minority and to give the Republic of Ireland a say in Northern Ireland affairs.

The agreement, which aims to put an end to the conflict once and for all, and to achieve peaceful coexistence between the communities of Northern Ireland, and between them and the Republic of Ireland, was based on a statement signed by Albert Reynolds for the Republic of Ireland and former British Prime Minister John Major in 1993, which stipulates the right of the peoples of North  Ireland to determine its fate.
