UNSMIL calls on the Libyan authorities to protect journalists.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, 3 November 2022 (Lana) The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called on the Libyan authorities to fully investigate and prosecute crimes committed against journalists and media professionals.
In a statement on the occasion of the International Day to end Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, the mission called for protection of journalists as key protectors of freedom of expression.
On this occasion, the Mission recalled journalists who had been victims of hate speech, beatings, arrests, abductions, disappearances or killings for their work, affirming the right of people to access information.
In 2021 and 2022, at least three journalists were abducted and disappeared for 36 days and 10 months in Libya, three others, including a woman, were assaulted by gunmen while conducting public interviews, and none of the perpetrators were brought to justice," the mission said in its statement.
