Human Rights Watch welcomes resolution to renew Fact-Finding Mission to Libya.
Pulbished on:Washington, 31 July 2022 (Lana) Human Rights Watch Organization has welcomed UN Human Rights Council resolution to renew Fact-Finding Mission to Libya ,considering that the work of the investigative mission is incomplete ,and the Council should demonstrate its commitment to accountability through supporting renewal of mandate of the mission for at least one year.
In a statement ,the Organization expressed concern over the proposed very short time framework ,that will extend the mandate for 9 months ,pointing that the situation of human rights in Libya still is at risk, with spread of grave violations by armed groups ,and continuing impunity for past violations ,according to the organization.
The Organization indicated that no Libyan or Foreign leaders or fighters have been held accountable for grave violations ,including the use anti-personnel mines during Tripoli war 2019-2020 ,warning of the continuing risk of landmines and abandoned or unexploded ordnance caused by several waves of conflict that caused massive damage to civilians and led to their displacement.
The Organization confirmed that it appreciated cooperation by the Libyan Government with the mission in its last visit to the country ,highlighting the restrictions imposed on local and international civil groups in the country ,which lead to the muzzling of independent groups that carry out vital work in the human rights area and humanitarian work.
