U.S. Ambassador in congratulatory message on anniversary of February Revolution: we support UN efforts to find compromises leading to elections as soon as possible.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, 17 February 2022 (Lana) The U.S. Envoy and Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, congratulated the Libyan people on the 11th anniversary of the February 17 revolution, reiterating Washington's support for UN efforts leading to a credible electoral track as soon as possible.
"Today marks the eleventh anniversary of the revolution, which unleashed promise and struggle over the past decade, the Libyans wanted change in 2011, they want change today, and they deserve to continue their journey from dictatorship, through unrest, to democracy in the end", Norland said in a post on the U.S. Embassy's SMS page on Thursday.
"This is still possible, if their leaders put Libya's interests first, and pushed the country in a positive direction, and despite the postponement of the elections, the desire to hold them has not been hidden, and the Libyans are more than ready to legitimize a permanent government that will unite the country, distribute oil wealth equitably, and restore Libya's sovereignty over its territory and borders," he said.
"The United States is not going to tell Libyans what to do in the current situation, but I want you to know that we support every effort, facilitated by the United Nations, to reach compromises that will lead, as soon as possible, to a credible track to elections," he added.
