Pulbished on:Tripoli, 30 December, 2021 (Lana) - The Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephanie Williams, stated that her meeting with a number of mayors focused on discussing developments in the situation in Libya and the importance of respecting the will of 2.8 million Libyans who registered for elections and aspire to exercise their democratic rights to choose who represents them and renew legitimacy of national institutions.
This came after her meeting via video call, Wednesday, with the mayors of Tobruk, Al-Marj, Al-Kufra, Sabha, Wadi Otaiba, Ghat, Al-Zawiya, Al-Shwerf, Adry Al-Shati, Bani Walid and Souq Al-Juma, in which she praised the mayors’ elections, considering it an experience that reflects the democratic pulse in Libyan society.
Williams said through her account on Twitter that the meeting touched on the importance of comprehensive national reconciliation and the protection of the social fabric in Libya, and that this meeting paints a patriotic picture that enhances efforts to build bridges of communication between Libyans, given that the mayors of municipalities are the closest to their citizens and are able to feel and express their concerns, their aspirations.
During this meeting, according to Stephanie, they discussed efforts to decentralize and support municipalities and the urgent need to provide budgets so that all municipalities can provide public services to citizens, with a focus on accelerating support for municipalities in southern Libya that have suffered and are still suffering from deprivation. Williams indicated that this session is the first round of communication with the general mayors of the municipalities of Libya, east, west and south, and a number of direct and virtual meetings will follow in the coming days.
