Embassies of France, Germany, Italy, Britain and America Warn Those Threatening Peace and Stability in Libya of Travel Ban and Freezing of Assets.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, 25 October 2021 (Lana) Embassies of France, Germany, Italy, Britain and the United States in Libya have warned individuals or entities participating in actions that threaten peace, stability or security in Libya, or impede or undermine the success of the political transition process, or provide support for such actions” that they could be designated as obstructers by the Committee established pursuant to paragraph 24 of resolution 1970 (2011) and subjected to travel ban and asset freeze measures.”
In a joint statement, the five embassies welcomed “the publication by the High National Elections Commission of the endorsement lists, required for presidential and parliamentary candidates,” describing this step as “an important development for those wishing to run for candidacy, as outlined in the implementation plan of the High National Elections Commission.”
They renewed support for the commission "while it carries out its duties with complete independence, saying ‘we urge all actors to heed its technical advice and respect its expertise, and condemned "all active players who undermine its work by threatening or obstructing."
"Through the two electoral entitlements the presidential and parliamentary elections, Libyan institutions and leaders will receive a new mandate from the people, that will allow them to fulfill important duties such as improving infrastructure, providing medical care, and ensuring that young Libyans receive a quality education," the statement said.
In their statement, the five countries also welcomed "the measures taken by the National Unity Government, as reaffirmed during the October 21 conference, to facilitate the holding of the elections, especially the provision of adequate funding for the commission and the necessary security measures, and urged government institutions to invest In protecting the integrity of the elections.
The five countries’ statement praised Libya’s successful hosting of the stabilization conference on October 21, noting that it “allowed senior officials from countries and organizations around the world to meet in Tripoli and support Libya’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.”
The statement affirmed "rejection of foreign interference in Libyan affairs, including the divisive and destabilizing role played by mercenaries, foreign fighters and foreign forces," stressing the need for "all parties to abide by the international law."
It praised “the spirit of patriotism and the commitment of the 5 + 5 Joint Military Committee, which presented its comprehensive plan of action for the withdrawal of mercenaries, foreign fighters and foreign forces from Libyan territory at the October 21 stabilization conference.”
