UN envoy, Kubis: All Libyans agree on the necessity of removing foreign forces and mercenaries from the country as soon as possible.

Tripoli, March 19, 2021 (LANA) - The UN envoy to Libya, Jan Kubis, confirmed the existence of a Libyan consensus on the rejection of foreign forces and mercenaries in the country.

"All Libyans agree on the necessity of removing foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan lands as soon as possible," Kubis said during a joint press conference in the German capital Berlin with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

The UN envoy expected that the coastal road between Sirt and Misurata would be opened within days or weeks.

In his press conference, Kubis stressed that there would be no UN intervention by peacekeepers to monitor the ceasefire in Libya, and that the Libyan parties would be responsible for monitoring the ceasefire.

Kubis added that the mission agreed with the new Libyan government about what the United Nations could contribute to achieving the aspirations of the Libyan people, and the necessity of implementing the Security Council resolutions on Libya and working to respect them.

 The UN envoy expressed his hope that all parties from the House of Representatives and the government of national unity would work to unify the ranks, calling on the new Libyan government to focus on economic and social issues and address the electricity shortage.

He noted that Libya, is a rich country exporting oil, and people are confident that the government will meet the needs, and that the mission will organize, within days, sessions sponsored by the Berlin Group, to discuss everything related to organizing elections in Libya in terms of security.
